At just 24, Lizl Simoes from Pretoria is proving that quiet beginnings can create the most resonant sound. An accomplished piano teacher, gifted musician, and ATKV-Crescendo mentorship finalist, she is stepping into the spotlight with her debut single “Muurblom”, released on 15 May across all digital platforms. But this is more than a musical debut, it is a tender, powerful invitation to embrace who you are and flourish exactly where life has placed you.
Lizl’s music feels like an open diary: warm, intimate, and profoundly sincere. Whether she’s seated at her piano or holding a guitar, her energetic yet honest voice draws you in. Gentle melodies wrap around soulful lyrics that don’t try to impress, they simply connect. Her sound is an exhale of authenticity in a world that often demands performance.

“‘Muurblom’ is really about a flower doing what flowers are meant to do to bloom,” Lizl shares. “It’s about making peace with who we are and stepping fully into our own shoes. About blooming where the Lord has planted us. It is for anyone who feels as though they are fading into the wallpaper of life. Even wallflowers are made to bloom.”
The song was born in a moment of creative drought. While preparing for ATKV-Crescendo’s final week in Stellenbosch, Lizl hit a wall. Seven songs needed to be submitted, and inspiration had vanished. In that quiet panic, a long-forgotten image from The Perks of Being a Wallflower returned to her, the wallflower. That single metaphor unlocked everything. Suddenly, the chorus flowed: “‘Muurblom’ came to life with the morning sun.” A soft, hopeful declaration of new beginnings.
Produced by Ruan Graaff, “Muurblom” is the first release in a thoughtful series of singles rather than a traditional EP. This choice reflects Lizl’s wise understanding of her own journey. “I don’t feel like I have just one story that can be contained in an EP,” she explains. “It’s fragments of different parts of my life.” By releasing singles, she gives herself the freedom to grow publicly, to explore, and to honour every authentic piece of her artistic identity.

Her participation in the ATKV-Crescendo programme has been life-changing, a true turning point that equipped her not only creatively but practically for the industry. It gave her networks, knowledge, and the confidence to claim her place as an artist. Now, Lizl carries a deeper purpose: to inspire young people that even in a world full of hardship, light and meaning can be found in the everyday.
In Lizl Simoes you meet someone who embodies the elegance of becoming. She reminds us that personal growth rarely looks like a sudden explosion of colour. More often, it is a slow, courageous unfurling — choosing to believe you were made to bloom, even if you’ve spent years feeling invisible. Her story speaks directly to every dreamer who has felt overlooked, every creative who has battled self-doubt, and every soul wondering if their quiet corner of the world matters.
Lizl’s music doesn’t shout. It whispers truth with such sincerity that you can’t help but lean in and see yourself in it. She is showing us that our most powerful chapters often begin in the moments we feel most unseen.
As her voice begins to travel through speakers and hearts across South Africa and beyond, one truth lingers beautifully: every wallflower carries the potential for breathtaking bloom.
The song is out. The morning sun is rising. The only question left is this: How long will you wait before you allow yourself to bloom, right where you are?
